Early Childhood Studies (Top-Up) BA (Hons)

The programme is designed to allow progression from a Foundation Degree or HND to an honours degree. You will strengthen your knowledge of young children’s holistic development and have opportunities to undertake placements and fieldwork in educational settings, as well as in health and social care. The programme is ideal if you are already in the workplace.

The aim of the course is to provide a broad-based academic and inter-disciplinary professional foundation for a variety of careers working with children 0-8 years old. It aims to meet the needs of those students who wish to build on previous study, either full or part time. The course is taught by a highly experienced multi-professional team with expertise in the fields of education, health and social care. There are opportunities to undertake placements and field work in educational, health and social care settings, to enable strong links between academic study and professional experience.

The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies top up degree is designed to:

  • establish a rigorous understanding of young children’s holistic development in the early years through engaging in detailed analysis and evaluation of multi-disciplinary theoretical perspectives and research evidence
  • develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of contemporary services and support for young children and families in a multi-agency context
  • extend and refine your critical reflection on your own practice in the Early Years Foundation Stage and your leadership and support of others
  • support you in making progress towards the achievement of relevant professional standards and roles, for example in relation to Early Years Teacher Status or as preparation for further training in teaching with QTS or social work

In addition to general entry requirements, applicants are normally expected to have written English and Mathematics equivalent to a GCSE grade C. Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to Early Childhood Studies by having undertaken prior experience of working with children under the age of eight. Applicants will need to attend an interview.
