Advertising (Joint Honours) BA/BSc (Hons)

Advertising, and the way organisations communicate with their audiences has been revolutionised by digital and social media. We are surrounded with advertising and promotion, exposed to millions of marketing messages each day. This programme captures the spirit of advertising and marketing communications in traditional and digital forms, and equips you to work in this field. We provide opportunities to visit companies locally and in the USA to meet professionals working in the sector. This subject will complement many others in the Joint Honours programme. Advertising as a Joint Honours subject is most commonly taken with Marketing or Media Production and Moving Image or Multimedia Journalism although many other combinations are possible.

This programme examines the increasingly important and dynamic role that advertising and marketing communications plays within an organisation. In the world of branded content and consumer power, it is important to recognise that the role of advertising and marketing communications is constantly changing, due to some extent the advances in technology.

Communication today is much more of a two-way or even three-way process and organisations must stimulate and respond to their customers instead of just persuading them to buy their brand. This programme takes a practical position on the application of this subject, with a heavy emphasis on experiences – such as the planning and execution of real projects.

Career opportunities: The promotions industry has a high demand for effective and creative communicators in every area of marketing communications - advertising, PR, media, marketing services, promotion and online advertising. This is in addition to positions with in-house advertising and PR departments, independent consultancies and agency work. Increasingly, marketing communicators are being hired by organisations in the public, not-for-profit and voluntary sectors.
